Exciting developments are taking place for Cahersiveen and the wider Kerry region, as the next step in expanding the South Kerry Greenway is well underway. The proposed new 5km greenway extension from Cahersiveen to Reenard promises to be a valuable addition to the existing 27km South Kerry Greenway, which is currently being constructed to link Glenbeigh to Cahersiveen. This extension will link the town to the Valentia Island ferry at Reenard, creating a scenic route ideal for walkers and cyclists alike.
On Thursday, October 17, Kerry County Council (KCC), in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), hosted a public consultation event at the Cahersiveen Library. This session was a key opportunity for local residents, landowners, and stakeholders to meet the project team, explore the various proposed route options, and share their thoughts on the best way forward. The project team is particularly keen to hear from the community about any concerns, ideas, or important local features that could influence the final design.
The Six Proposed Route Options
Kerry County Council has outlined six possible routes for this 5km extension, each offering its own unique path through the stunning local landscape:
Valentia Estuary Coastal Route
Old Valentia Railway Line
Local Road L7528
N70 and Local Road L4005
Greenfield Offline Option
Old Valentia Railway Line
Each option offers different experiences, from coastal views along the Valentia Estuary to the nostalgic charm of the old railway line. Local voices will help shape which of these will become the chosen route, and Kerry County Council encourages everyone to contribute their thoughts.
How to Get Involved
The consultation period is open until Friday, November 15, 2024. During this time, the public can review the detailed plans online via the Kerry County Council website or in person at KCC offices in Cahersiveen, Tralee, or Castleisland. Submissions can be made directly through an online feedback form, or sent by post to the Kerry National Roads Office in Castleisland.
For those who couldn't attend the library event, this is your chance to have a say in shaping a project that will not only improve local transport but also enhance tourism, boost local businesses, and create a beautiful, safe space for walking and cycling.
Looking Ahead: What’s Next?
The current consultation is the first of two rounds, with the second expected to take place in early 2025. After gathering public feedback, the project team will move toward identifying a preferred route, which will be presented in the next phase of consultation.
Once complete, the Cahersiveen-Reenard greenway will form a key part of Kerry's integrated greenway network, promoting sustainable transport, outdoor recreation, and economic development throughout the region. The local economy is expected to benefit from increased tourism, as the greenway will attract visitors seeking to explore the breathtaking landscapes and rich heritage of the Skellig Coast.
So, whether you’re a local resident, business owner, or simply a lover of the outdoors, now is the time to get involved. Make your voice heard in shaping this important addition to our beautiful corner of Kerry!
